Do you need a street closure permit to move in Philadelphia? If you’re moving to an area with plenty of street parking, probably not. Otherwise, a Temporary No Parking permit costs $25-$50. It might be worth it to avoid blocking traffic, annoying new neighbors, stressing over parking, or getting a ticket.
With more people and cars, narrow streets, and increased construction, parking in many neighborhoods is tight. The city has also ramped up citations for parking violations that cause congestion. Even if you’ve moved before without issues, things are different now. Most likely, you’ll need a Temporary No Parking permit, which is also required for things like dumpsters or storage pods.
Here is our step-by-step guide to getting a permit:
1. Fill out the application on the Streets Department website. Philadelphia charges $50.00 per day in Center City and $25.00 per day for each 40-ft. spot (2 parking spaces.) An average moving truck is 80-ft. so make sure you get the correct amount of space.
2. The Streets Department will email your invoice (about four days after your application is sent.)
3. After payment is made, they will email you copies of your permits (one for each 40’ span)That look like this:

4. Call the nearest police station, to see if they have the Temporary No Parking signs in stock. If so, print out your permit and head over to pick them up. If they don’t have any signage on hand they’ll direct you to purchase your own signs at a retailer nearby.
5. Fill out the signs with the info from your permits then secure them where everyone can see.
6.Before your moving truck rolls up, make sure you’ve got your permits ready to clear out any rogue cars. If a car’s still parked in your spot, give your local police district’s non-emergency line a call—they can help track down the owner. Technically, the space is yours for the time you’ve paid for, but hey, sometimes people forget, or life happens. After all, these are your new neighbors, so be a good sport. You never know when you’ll need to borrow a cup of sugar (or a jump start) in a few weeks!
Now all that’s left is all that, uh, unpacking! I personally believe this should also be left to the professionals 😉 Here are some local movers:
